A total of 559,000 doses of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine arrived from Japan today.
The vaccines were sent by the Japanese government under the COVAX program. With this, Nepal has received one million 614,740 doses of vaccine against coronavirus infection, according to Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) spokesperson Dr. Krishna Prasad Poudel.
These vaccines will be administered among the elderly in provinces 1 and 2, spokesperson Poudel said, adding that the vaccines were flown in from Japan after the Indian-made Covishield failed to reach Nepal on time.
Similarly, 1.6 million doses of Vero Cell will soon be shipped from China to provide to priority communities and people under 50 years of age.
Nepal has already received 10.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine. According to the Ministry of Health, 4,942,250 people have received their first dose of the vaccine so far, while the number of fully vaccinated people is 3,846,736.
